Intro
Readiness in Tempo is a brand new tab focused on analyzing day to day physiological readiness and adaptation to training.
There are many apps and dedicated hardware products that provide this functionality, this is Indie’s take on it. Special shoutout and my thanks to Marco Altini who has his own HRV app and openly shares his research on the topic.
Some general highlights of Readiness in Tempo,
- Readiness in Tempo is currently based on HRV (heart rate variability) and RHR (resting heart rate)
- Readiness is unique to each one of us because it is based on our unique physiology, lifestyle, and how they affect the data points (HRV, RHR) used to infer the readiness
- As always, none of this data leaves your device, and all the stats are calculated locally from the data in the Health app
- Tempo relies on the data in the Apple Health app to calculate all the stats for readiness

If you are not an Apple Watch user and use other fitness trackers, depending on what your fitness tracker saves in the Health app, this functionality may or may not work as designed.

What is HRV?
There’s plenty of info on HRV (heart rate variability) out there that does much better job than I can do here. Here are some key things to keep in mind,
- Our hearts do not beat like a perfect metronome. There are tiny variations between each heartbeat measured in ms (milliseconds) (1 second = 1000 milliseconds). HRV is a measure of these variations.
- These variations are the result of our autonomic nervous system handling various external and internal stresses like digestion, bantering with friends, exercise, illness, and so on. So HRV is a measure of how our nervous system is handling various physical and emotional life stresses all the time.
- In general, higher HRV is considered a sign of better fitness, but that is also subjective. HRV can vary throughout a day, day over day, and also differs person to person.
- There is not a specific target value that anyone can aim to unlock for a best HRV. Instead what matters more is the HRV trend.
- Readiness in Tempo constantly analyzes daily HRV values (along with RHR) to create and visualize baseline and trends specific to your data, affected by your training and lifestyle.
